ABFT Special Topics Series

ABFT for Victims of Domestic Violence

Speaker:
Brianna Brennan, LMFT

90-min webinar recorded on Oct 1, 2024 as part of ABFT Special Topics Series.

Domestic violence is a major problem worldwide. 1 in 15 American children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence. There is little research regarding how parents can support their children who have been exposed to domestic violence. Additionally, there is a noticeable gap in domestic violence services for children after domestic violence.

Brianna Brennan, LMFT will explain how attachment-based family therapy (ABFT) can be applied with families who have been impacted by domestic violence. Participants will not only learn about the clinical implications for working with traumatized caregivers, but also how ABFT can help clinicians target therapeutic goals with caregivers to support their child in the aftermath of domestic violence. Ms. Brennan will also discuss how ABFT was adapted to develop a parenting group for non-offending caregivers.

The target audience for this webinar includes Counselors, Couple and Family Therapists, Mental Health Professionals, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Social Workers and school personnel.

  • Discuss the pilot study research findings on ABFT applied to children and families impacted by domestic violence.
  • Describe clinical findings related to traumatized systems and best practices for parental subsystems.
  • Identify applications of ABFT for domestic violence population.
