ABFT Advanced Workshop (Spring 2024)

March 7-8, 14-15, & 21-22, 2024 (6 half-days)

The ABFT Advanced Workshop is appropriate for those who have previously attended the full ABFT Introductory Workshop. The Advanced Workshop will further develop the skills of therapists who have started using ABFT with their clients. This advanced training is a follow-up, intensive, workshop with some didactic presentations. Participants will learn about the use of emotion-focused skills in the context of ABFT as well as discuss and explore person of the therapist issues impacting one’s work. During the advanced training, a certified ABFT trainer provides supervision via role-play. In preparation for the training, we ask therapists to think about their biggest challenges in utilizing ABFT with families in Tasks 1-5.

The training is delivered as 6 half-day live webinars.

CEs are available for APA/ASWB.

The target audience for this training includes Counselors, Couples and Family Therapists, Mental Health Professionals Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, and Social Workers who have previously attended the 3-day/Two-Part ABFT Introductory Workshop.

Webinars 1 & 2: 

  • Discuss therapist fears and barriers in implementing ABFT. 
  • Explain how to access one’s own woundedness. 
  • Identify how one’s own person of the therapist (POTT) issues may promote and/or inhibit working with attachment in families. 
  • Discuss the purpose of deepening emotions in ABFT. 
  • Describe how to use the “self” to deepen emotion. 
  • List at least 5 emotional deepening techniques used in ABFT. 

Webinars 3 & 4: 

  • Demonstrate how to deepen emotion when facilitating the relational reframe session. 
  • Discuss how to manage common challenges when engaging families in the relational reframe. 
  • Specify how to elicit and deepen emotion in the attachment narrative. Identify the importance of exploring the content of relational ruptures to deepen emotion. 
  • Describe barriers and solutions experienced when working in sessions alone with young people. 
  • Demonstrate how to deepen emotion when eliciting the attachment narrative. 

Webinars 5 & 6: 

  • Discuss how to work with couples in the context of ABFT. 
  • Explain how to manage caregiver resistance in sessions alone with them. 
  • Identify how POTT issues may impact working with caregivers. 
  • Describe how to manage defensiveness in attachment repair sessions.
  • Demonstrate how to use emotion deepening techniques when coaching an attachment repair session. 
  • Specify how to manage challenges experienced when facilitating the autonomy promoting task.

Suzanne Levy, Ph.D.
Suzanne Levy, Ph.D., is an internationally renowned licensed clinical psychologist and co-developer of ABFT. Previously she was the Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives and Training of the ABFT Training Program at Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions. Since 2007, Dr. Levy has been conducting ABFT training workshops and supervision for therapists nationally and internationally. She has presented regionally, nationally, and internationally on ABFT, emotion coaching, child and adolescent therapies, resilience, adolescent depression, adolescent development, and adolescent substance use.


Guy Diamond, Ph.D.
Guy Diamond, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and formerly was Associate Professor at Drexel University in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. His primary work has been in the area of youth suicide prevention and treatment research. On the prevention side, he has created a program focused on training, screening and triage to be implemented in non-behavioral health settings. On the treatment side, he has focused on the development and testing of attachment-based family therapy (ABFT), especially for teens struggling with depression and suicide. ABFT has now been applied to children and young adults, LGBTQ youth and adults, and adopted in clinics all over the world where it is used as a transdiagnostic approach to patient mental health and ruptures in family attachment.

However, the full amount of tuition may be applied to a future course (i.e. you may transfer your registration to a future introductory workshop).
