In this segment, the therapist asks James and parents why James doesn’t go to his parents when he is upset or stressed. The therapist then highlights the consequences of not going to the parents; the consequence for both the adolescent and the parents. Finally, the therapist assesses the longing for all family members to have closer relationship and obtains agreement for improving the relationship as the first goal of therapy.
Instructions:
First, you will watch the therapy video through in its entirety. Then, you will re-watch the therapy video, pausing at key moments to reflect on what is happening during the therapy session.
As you are watching:
1. Track the phases of the relational reframe.
2. Take note of what the therapist is doing to incorporate all family members in the process.
3. Take note of the techniques used to deepen emotion.
4. Track when clients are intellectualizing or actually experiencing the desired attachment promoting emotions.
5. Track when the adolescent’s attachment needs/longing is activated and parent/caregivers’ instincts are activated.
6. Notice when the therapist feels like they have enough agreement from each family member that they can shift to the contracting theme.
7. Notice how the therapist frames the relational contract different for each family member.
